On 28 July Newark Town centre will once again resonate with the sounds of wheels on tarmac as the elite of British cycling slug it out to determine who will be crowned champion.

Following on from the hugely popular event last year, once again the finale of the British Cycling National Circuit Series will use the historic Royal Market as the backdrop for the final races of the season.

Last year we saw a massive influx of visitors to the town, with the businesses who supported the event showing increased footfall through the evening.

Anti-social behaviour at Newark’s St Marks Place continues to be stopped in its tracks as part of the Safer Streets project.

Pedestrian gating, the final security measure to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, has been installed. This, alongside vehicle access gating installed in January 2023, has been installed to prevent public access to the site which had previously been subject to drug use, urinating, and graffiti, leaving residents and workers in the area feeling unsafe.

On 4 July 1943, a plane crashed on take off in Gibraltar. On board this aircraft was the Commander in Chief of the Polish Forces, his daughter Zofia, and other eminent dignitaries including an English MP.

That man was General Władysław Sikorski, Polish Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces in exile.
