Renting a Newark and Sherwood District Council property

Newark and Sherwood District Council properties are allocated to those eligible for housing and priority is given to those in most housing need.

As a council tenant, you will have a Tenancy Agreement (PDF File, 863kb).

Responsibilities

As a council tenant you have responsibilities including:

  • Paying your rent in full and on time to maintain a clear rent account
  • To report repairs needed to your home
  • To live in your property as your only or main home
  • Not to be a nuisance

Newark and Sherwood District Council's responsibilities include:

  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Providing advice and assistance on your tenancy
  • Investing in your property
  • Maintenance of communal and estate facilities
  • Provide access and information on your rent account

If you have already applied for housing with Newark and Sherwood District Council, you can view your application or express an interest in a property. Please have your account number to hand.

 

Apply for housing

In order to apply for a home with Newark and Sherwood District Council, you must register with us first. This can be done through MyAccount.

Please make sure you have the following information available before you apply:

  • National Insurance Number
  • ID – for example, Passport, Driving Licence, Birth certificate for all members of household
  • Proof and information on any benefit
  • Medical information as appropriate

The application form will ask you for details about yourself and everyone who will live in the property, where you live now, where you would like to live and whether you have any medical conditions or disabilities which might affect the type of property you require.

Once you are on the housing register you will be given an application reference number which you will need to view your application and bid on available properties. This is called a “choice based letting” system and means you can choose where you want to live.

To bid on available properties using My Account, applicants will need to use their housing application reference number to create an account.
