Adapting/Altering your home

Newark and Sherwood District Council offers a range of adaptations to help your changing needs and circumstances. The information below is there to help point you in the right direction.

What is the process for applying for an adaptation to my home?

You will need to make contact with your local Occupational Therapist who will carry out an assessment of your needs. They may also wish to carry out a joint visit with our Architectural Technician if advice is required on whether suggested work is feasible. If you meet with the OT’s adaptation criteria then a referral will be sent to us and we will then make contact with you to advise on the adaptation process and likely timescale. The Nottingham County Council OT number is 0300 500 8080.

We are able to carry out some minor adaptation requests without needing an OT referral. These ‘fast-track adaptation’ works are restricted to grab rails at entrance doors, concrete half steps, lever taps and second stair rails. If you would like to request a ‘fast-track adaptation’ please complete our Contact Us Form.  Alternatively contact our Customer Access Service on 0800 561 0010.

How long will the installation take place?

We commit to completing adaptations in the following timescales:

  • Minor adaptations such as grab rails -7 working days of the receipt of the referral
  • Major adaptations such as stair lift and hoist - 30 working days from receipt of the referral

How do I get in touch?

For minor adaptations you need to seek referral.

For major adaptations you need to make contact with the Nottingham County Council Occupational Therapy team on 0300 500 8080.
