Involving tenants in service improvements is vital to the success of Newark and Sherwood Homes. The various options for involvement and participation are at the heart of its work. We believe that our tenants deserve a first class housing service. This service should start at the very moment they apply for one of our homes and continue for the rest of their tenancy.
Tenant participation is supported by the Tenancy and Estates Team, with seven Housing Officers responsible for facilitating tenant participation and consultation by encouraging tenants to become involved in the housing service.
We have a comprehensive structure for ascertaining our tenant’s views. Tenants can become involved by:
-
Neighbourhood Improvement Panels
-
Housing Matters
-
Monitoring Groups
-
Surgeries
-
Surveys
- District Tenant Compact
-
Tenants and Residents Associations Tenant Training Courses
-
Resident Involvement Strategy
-
Estate Walkabouts

These are held approximately every 6 weeks and are chaired by tenants and involve tenants and officers from Newark and Sherwood Homes. The aim of the groups for Repairs and Maintenance, and, Housing Management, is to look at present policy and procedure and suggest ways in which services can be enhanced.

RESIDENT INVOLVEMENT STRATEGY
Newark and Sherwood Homes, in consultation with residents, has recently reviewed our strategy which considers resident involvement in Newark and Sherwood through to 2012.
The Resident Involvement Strategy is designed to be easy to follow while at the same time giving residents the opportunity to examine what Newark and Sherwood Homes has to offer in the form of involvement and participation.
DISTRICT TENANT COMPACT
We have also recently reviewed the District Tenant Compact. Compacts are agreements between council tenants and landlords setting out how tenants will be invovled in decisions affecting their homes and communities.
SURGERIES
Local surgeries take place across the District which allows tenants and leaseholders to meet senior officers and discuss local issues.
SURVEYS
When necessary Newark and Sherwood Homes will survey tenants and leaseholders to gain their views on a variety of issues.
TENANT CONSULTATION REGISTER
We appreciate that not everyone has the time to attend a meeting or to become involved as much as others. Therefore we have established a register of interested individuals who wish to be consulted on housing related issues. The Tenant Consultation Register is an opportunity for those tenants who wish to be kept informed of the latest developments within housing and are willing to give constructive feedback on proposed policies and procedures sent to them by Newark and Sherwood Homes. Tenants who wish to be included should contact the Tenancy and Estates Team on 0845 258 5550.
TENANTS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONS (TRAs)
Throughout the district we have a number of tenants and resident associations which work in partnership with Newark and Sherwood Homes to help tenants in their areas. In addition there is one TRA for leaseholders across the District.
The Tenancy and Estates Team can provide you with help and advice on TRAs as well as the local groups in your area. We can be contacted on 0845 258 5550.
Newark and Sherwood District Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations are the umbrella group that looks after the interests of these associations. The Federation will also be able to give you contact details for tenants and residents associations across the district.

Have you ever wanted to establish a tenants and residents association in your area? Need a group to put your views forward to the Council as one voice? The Tenancy and Estates Team can help you to set up your group and even provide a starter grant and training to get you up and running. Is there a group in your area already? Why not join forces?
TENANTS IN RURAL AREAS
Social inclusion is at the heart of the services provided by Newark and Sherwood Homes. With this in mind, we have established the Rural Tenants and Residents Association, for those villages across the district that presently have no recognised tenants and residents association. The idea is to look at the services we currently provide to see whether they meet the needs of our rural tenants.
YOUTH TENANT AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONS
Newark and Sherwood Homes is proud to have young people involved in the provision of the housing service. Presently there are two youth TRA's who are recognised as a tenants and resident association and are members of the Newark and Sherwood District Federation of Tenants and Resident Associations.
TRAINING COURSES
Training courses on a variety of topics including fundraising, running a group or even minute taking are available through the Tenancy and Estates Team on 0845 258 5550.
